By having a sequence, metronome or click that is full in terms of sub-division means we can become reliant upon it for our sense of time. If something is giving us all our required pulse, why try to feel it ourselves?
The consequence of those sequences or clicks is that we don’t develop our own sense of time and meter, the inner clock. It is vital that can feel time internally so that when we are confronted with a click-less situation, we can cope and play as normal.
By experimenting with different click settings, we can cultivate, knowing innately where we should place our sub-divisions. For example; having the click pulse on 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 leaves a gap that we have to feel. We could even have just one pulse per bar, on the 1 perhaps.
You will soon become comfortable with the space that is created and there is no better way to improve your inner clock.
